Feeling the First Signs of Cold or Flu? Fight It Naturally With Elderberries!

Everyone knows that elderberries make great wines, pies & jams, but many people are surprised to learn that elderberries can help fight colds and flu.

The European Elder, or Sambucus nigra is found throughout warmer parts of Europe and North America. It is considered a deciduous small tree or shrub and produces clusters of edible white flowers and later dark purple/black berries. The flowers, bark, root, and berries have been used for centuries for various cosmetic, comestible, and medicinal purposes.

Both the common cold and flu are caused by viruses. Elderberries contain strong anti-viral properties, and recent studies show Sambucol (elderberry extract) to reduce the severity of cold and flu symptoms. Further studies reveal Sambucol was shown to be effective in vitro against 10 strains of influenza virus and shortened the duration flu symptoms.

In addition to having excellent anti-viral properties, elderberries contain large amounts of vitamins A, B and C, as well as carotenoids, flavonoids, and amino acids. These 1/8” berries have remarkably high levels of vitamin A and contain more vitamin C than blueberries or cranberries. (Elderberry as a Medicinal Plant, D. Charlebois) Both vitamins A and C are considered exceptional antioxidants, and both help to boost and maintain the immune system.

When you get caught with a cold or feel a potential flu coming on, don’t worry – you don’t have to track down fresh, frozen, or dried elderberries to make your own syrup. Elderberry is available as single extract, or if you prefer a little additional support, it is also available as one of many ingredients in targeted supplements.
