Tips for Taking Vitamins

Vitamins are an essential part of everyday living. They can provide you with the nutrients that your body needs to thrive and to live a healthy lifestyle which you may not get from the type of foods that you eat on a daily basis. Some may even help to protect your immune system against illnesses. If you have difficulty sticking with a schedule for taking your vitamins, are unable to swallow those that are larger than others, or simply are unsure or which vitamins are the best for you, these tips will assist you in making well-informed decisions when it comes to taking your vitamins.

The Right Vitamins for Me

There are different factors that will play a large part in deciding which vitamins and supplements you should be taking on a regular basis. You will want to have a healthy and safe balance of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients for your own body. First, take into consideration the different aspects of your daily lifestyle. For example, pregnant women should be taking pre-natal vitamins and folic acid that will help in protecting against common birth defects. Vitamin D is ideal for those who may not be very active while those who stay on-the-go may need vitamins that are ideal to boost their energy levels.

Age can also play a large factor in deciding which vitamins to take. Typically, children and young adults may need to take more vitamins than adults would need to take because their bodies are still growing. Look for multi-vitamins that are recommended for your age range such as teenager multi-vitamins to ensure that you are getting all of your daily essentials. You will also want to choose vitamins specific to your gender because men and women process vitamins differently due to hormones and energy levels.

Your overall health and diet should be taken into consideration when deciding on what vitamins are best for you to take. Vitamin deficiencies may mean that you need to take certain supplements that others do not typically need to take. If you are prone to certain illnesses such as the common cold, Vitamin C is a great choice that can be taken daily. By eating a healthy balanced diet rather than processed foods, you may not need to take the same amount of vitamins as someone who does not try to eat healthy. Be sure to ask your doctor about which vitamins you should be taken for the best results.

Trouble Swallowing Vitamins

While some vitamins and supplements are small and easy to swallow, others are known as “horse pills” and you may have more trouble getting them down. Children may also have additional problems swallowing large pills that adults do not have. First, check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if your pills can be crushed. Some pills such as gel caps cannot be cut or crushed to take. Another great alternative is consuming gummy vitamins, which are especially beneficial for children.

These tips may help you to swallow your vitamins easier.

• Put a whole or crushed pill on a teaspoon along with some peanut butter or jelly and swallow
• Crush your vitamins and mix them with a cup of pudding and eat
• Hold your nose while taking the pill with water so that you must swallow
• Drink water immediately after putting the vitamin in your mouth and hold your head back
• Cut the vitamin in half to make it easier to swallow
• Replace some of your pill vitamins with gummy vitamins

Best Times to Take Vitamins

Bodies perform different functions during different times of the day. This means that you should always try to take your vitamins during the best times to avoid getting sick and to utilize all of the benefits that the supplement offers. For example, calcium is best taken at night as it can help you to go to sleep easier and your body will absorb these nutrients more efficiently at this time of day.

Be sure to take all of your vitamins after a meal, as they are best ingested with food. Vitamins, supplements and other pills should never be taken on an empty stomach unless specified. Some vitamins that are best ingested with a meal include Vitamin A, E, D and K.

Staying on Schedule

Staying on a schedule is extremely important to take full advantage of all of the health benefits that vitamins offer. To maintain a good schedule for taking pills, you may put an alarm on your phone to remind you when to take each vitamin daily or you may put all of your vitamins into a pill sorting container for each day of the week so that you remember to take all of them.
