Improve Memory, Focus, and Concentration with These 6 Herbs

Are you having a hard time focusing and concentrating on your daily tasks or work projects? Do you find that you are forgetting things more frequently than you used to? Maybe it’s time to consider giving yourself a little brain boost for memory support and mental alertness.

For centuries herbs have been used as a means to help keep the body healthy and to prevent disease. Different herbs can affect specific organs, so naturally there are herbs that can have an effect on the brain. There are many different brain-boosting supplements available that help to improve memory, concentration, and focus. When looking for an herbal supplement that enhances cognitive abilities, look for one that contains some or all of the following herbs:

Ginkgo Biloba: Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species and its leaves continue to be among the most extensively studied herbs. It is high in anti-oxidants and studies have shown that it helps improve thinking, learning and memory. Although scientists are not absolutely sure how ginkgo improves cognitive function, it is believed that the main reason is because it increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

Panax Ginseng: Ginseng has been used for thousands of years in Chinese medicine for a variety of medicinal purposes, including as a restorative aid and as a memory enhancer. Scientists believe that the ginsenosides (saponin constituents) in ginseng are responsible for its beneficial effects including the enhancement of memory function.

Gotu Kola: Another plant that has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal benefits, gotu kola is a relative of the parsley plant – unlike parsley, however, it has no flavor or odor. It has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties which make it useful for a wide variety of health conditions.  Studies have demonstrated that among the many benefits of gotu kola is that it helps to reduce anxiety and improve mental function.

American Skullcap: Also referred to as “mad dog skullcap,” American skullcap was used in early folk medicine to treat rabies. It has anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and mildly sedative properties. It is thought that the relaxing effects of American Skullcap help to calm the mind and enable clarity and focus.

Ashwagandha: In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is described as “Indian ginseng” because of its restorative properties. Medical studies have shown ashwagandha has neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-stress properties and improves learning, memory, and reaction time.

Hawthorn: Hawthorn is primarily used to help protect against heart disease and help control high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Its high anti-oxidant content helps to dilate and strengthen blood vessels and improve blood flow. Hawthorn is believed to increase memory and cognitive function by increasing the blood flow and oxygen to the brain.

If you’re feeling a little mentally sluggish and forgetful – or even if you’re not – supplementing with brain-boosting herbs can help support cognitive function and provide additional health benefits.
